About ‘Christmas in Tetbury’

‘Christmas in Tetbury’ was formed in 2010 by members of The Tetbury Chamber of Commerce, the gold award winning Tetbury in Bloom team, The Lions Club of Tetbury and Tetbury Town Council.

Our aim was to improve the look and feel of the Town during the run up to Christmas in order to encourage visitors and residents to come into the Town centre. A theme of warm white lights was chosen to create a uniformity and WOW factor within the Town centre so that Tetbury becomes known as a ‘must’ place to visit during the festive season.

Starting up and Decorating the Town

A grant from The Gloucestershire Trade Local Campaign allowed us to buy new low voltage lights, supplied by The Tetbury Hardware Store in Long Street at a generous discount.

Forty-six lighted Christmas trees sponsored by businesses were used to decorate the buildings, predominantly along Church Street, Long Street and Market Place. Three large trees on the Town's greens at The Knapp, The Green and The Chipping were also decorated with white lights.

Nearly seven hundred new white lights adorned each of the 2 Market House trees which are kindly supplied to The Feoffees of Tetbury by The Lowsley Williams family of Chavenage House. Together with the white lights on the Market House building itself, these formed the centre piece of the Town’s decorations.

Decorating the Town took place over the last two weeks of November – probably the coldest two weeks in November for decades!!

The large trees on the Knapp and The Green were decorated with lights supplied and sponsored by Tetbury Town Council and erected by members of the Christmas in Tetbury team with the help of additional members of the Tetbury in Bloom Team. It took 4½ hours to complete but the promise of bacon butties at the end of the task made it do-able!

On two of the coldest Saturday mornings in late November, The Feoffees spent several hours decorating the Market House with white lights and again members from the Tetbury in Bloom team assisted in the decorating the two twenty-foot trees.

The trees and lights on the shop buildings were supplied and erected by Pete Kirkpatrick of KP Gardens Ltd and this took 3 days to complete.

St Marys’ Parish Church agreed to have Christmas lights adorning the main gates. Pete Morrissey of Tetbury in Bloom created a fantastic star using in excess of three hundred lights. It made a wonderful entrance to the church and was admired by many.

The team are still working away to make Tetbury look and feel better and better every year.

Support us, or join in, if you can - but do visit Tetbury at Christmas.
